5 Tips for keeping your Fiddle Leaf Fig plant thriving

If you look at just about any magazine, pinterest board or Instagram account you will most likely see a Fiddle Leaf Fig plant. They are the IT plant right now, and for good reason! They are a gorgeous plant that adds character to any room. But they can be finicky- which is why I held off buying one. But, I just couldn't continue calling myself a plant mama without at least trying to keep one happy + healthy!

I now own 2 Fiddle Leaf Fig plants and they have quickly become two of my favorite house plants. In case you are thinking of getting one, or are struggling to keep yours happy, I put together 5 tips for keeping your Fiddle Leaf Fig plant happy + healthy!

5 tips for keeping your Fiddle Leaf Fig plant happy + healthy:

  1. Choose the right Lighting. Fiddle Leaf Figs love indirect, filtered sunlight. Not too bright but not too dark. They will move toward the window or light source so make sure to turn them so they continue to grow straight! But once you find the spot they like, don't move them too often. They don't like that!
  2. Choose the right amount of Water. You don't want to over or under water your plant. Only water your plant when the top 1-2" of soil is dried out. Quality of water matters too! If you can't catch rainwater or use spring water, use filtered water. If you only have tap water available, fill a pitcher and let it sit out & open overnight to let the chlorine evaporate. Your plant will grow best with rain or spring water!
  3. Choose the right soil. Fiddle Leaf Figs like rich, well drained soil. Use an indoor potting soil or try mixing it with 1/3 cactus soil to ensure proper drainage. Cactus soil is rockier than most soils and allows for better drainage. Poor soil can cause all kinds of problems with your plant from root rot to fungus or bacteria. You want your roots to be moist, not wet.
  4. Choose the right Temperature. Fiddle Leaf Figs love a humid, warm environment. 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. You don't want your room to drop below 50 degrees or they will start to get brown leaves. They also do not like drafts, so keep them away from open windows and doors and air conditioning units that can dry out their leaves. You also want to avoid moving them around too much as it can cause their leaves to drop as well.
  5. Keep their leaves dusted and clean. Fiddle Leaf Figs love having their leaves dusted off! Too much dust accumulation can block light absorption. I like to dust them off either by spraying them down with a spray bottle and gently wiping them with a soft cloth or just lightly dusting them with a damp cloth.

I wanted to share another BONUS TIP that makes my plants THRIVE! About once a week (maybe longer when I forget) I spray my plants down with my Thieves Household Cleaner. It is a plant based all natural cleaner and does not harm my plants- I have been doing it for years with both my indoor and outdoor plants!

I use 1 capful of this Thieves cleaner concentrate and mix it with filtered water, shake and spray. I thoroughly spray all the leaves of my plants. Bonus: it helps keep pests away on my patio plants!
