Girly Dots Posh Legs
Tell us a little about the handmade products you sell.
I make handmade leg warmers primarily. I started with just the Posh Legs but I quickly added the Big Kid Posh Legs, embellished Fuzzy Legs, and most recently added the light weight Pixie Legs for spring. I use only the best and softest materials. I also have eco- friendly bamboo options for the earth conscious shopper. My products are fashionable, functional, and practical.
How did you get started with your business and how long have you had your shop?
It all started when I received a pair of tights for my daughter when she was a baby. When I opened them I thought it was odd that they didn't have feet. I put them on her with a little skirt and looooved them! she looked like a little ballerina! I've always thought tights were such a pain with diaper changes. How fabulous would these be if they only covered her legs? That would leave easy access to her rump for diaper changing and then potty training later on. Posh Legs were born.
I wanted to share this discovery with other moms. Unfortunately I was in no financial position to invest in a business, nor did I have any idea where to begin. I had heard of Etsy but had never been to the website. Once I checked it out I knew that this was where I could share my new found convenience item. Of course, I became a shopaholic in the process. I opened my Etsy shop in April of 2009.
Is this your job or just a hobby?
At first it was filling the need for protection and easy access for my crawling twins. Before too long it had grown into a full time job. Since then I have launched my own website www.poshpipsqueak.com. In addition, there are several other online retailers that carry my line. Most recently we were featured in LA Splash magazine and included in the celebrity gift bags in the exclusive Boom Boom Room gifting suite for the 2011 Golden Globes. Who would have thought?! I owe it all to Etsy!
What inspires you and or how do you stay inspired?
My twins have always been my inspiration. It isn't difficult to stay inspired with constantly changing seasons and trends.
What advice do you have for other Etsy sellers?
Don't give up. It's hard to get started. It takes patience and perseverance. People need time to know and trust a new seller.
It never hurts to ask. I fumbled through starting my shop with no one to help me. I didn't know where to look for tips or assistance on Etsy. Etsy has made it so easy now with all the resources they have readily available to shop owners. I've had a few people contact me with questions and looking for advise. I am always eager lend a hand. If you can't find the answer just ask someone. Etsy shop owners are some of the most genuine, good hearted people I've known.
What is your favorite product you've purchased from another Etsy seller?
I purchased two hand painted wooden letters with pegs from Simply Made. These letters were customized for my kids as coat hooks and hang in our entryway. She did such a lovely job!
What is your typical day like?
Are you kidding? I have 2 1/2 year old twins! Its crazy, lol! Upon awakening I tend to my childrens daily needs. After a quick shower we are off to do errands such as grocery shopping or a trip to the post office with yesterdays orders. After lunch, I work while they nap. The rest of the day is spent tending to my childrens needs and housework. I spend every evening and weekends creating or working.
Name three things in your workspace that you could not live without.
My two sewing machines, my shipping label printer that has really simplified my life, my 15 year old pair of Fiskars. There is nothing like a good pair of scissors!
I would love the Pirate Peace Posh Legs in brown for my son if I win!
